Sondra Hines Yates

Sondra Hines Yates is a multitalented educator, journalist, entrepreneur, fitness coach, research analyst, writer as well as a marketing and communications professional.  She has spent the majority of her 30-year career guiding students at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) to see beyond what is, to what could be, by providing them with a real-world, affordable, hands-on education that has been transformative to the individuals as well as our community.  Her work has also focused on helping organizations improve their operational performance and incorporating Diversity, Equity & Inclusion into systems.

Yates began her career at CPCC as an Adjunct Professor, from 1998 to 2013, where she planned and developed inspiring, interesting, and interactive contextualized lessons using a variety of instructional techniques and technology to prepare first-year and/or adult students with practical skills and knowledge.  From 2015 to 2016 Yates was the Program Manager for Adult Basic Education in the College & Career Readiness Department and managed high-school equivalency/GED classes at two campuses and eight community sites.  She guided students toward the transition to post-secondary education, including applying for scholarships, grants, navigating financial aid, and college visits from 2013 to 2015 as an Academic Advisor.  Since 2016, Sondra has served as a Career Coach and Work-Based Learning Manager in the College & Career Readiness Department, where she advocates on behalf of students for employment towards economic mobility.  In addition, she Co-Managed two workforce development initiatives, that included Pathways To Careers for students dual-enrolled in high-school equivalency and/or college training, and Way To Work for students enrolled in basic literacy classes.

As a college and community leader, Yates was appointed to the Women’s Leadership Council (2021), Student Success Leadership Team, and the North Carolina Community College Performance Partnership Advisory Team.  She also served on the Emerging Leaders Council (October 2019), and Managers Academy (February 2017), as well as Co-Lead for the Talent Development Wellness Learning Community, Mentor for the Positive Communities For Women, and a member of the Student Data Team.

During this time, Yates also served as Vice President, Marketing & Community Relations/ Communication Change Management/Project Manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America from 2003 to 2008, where she was responsible for overall agency communications.  Prior work experience includes being a Freelance Writer and Research Analyst responsible for research, interviews, writing articles, and identifying opportunities for media exposure from 1999 to 2003.  As well as Senior Account Executive/Copywriter for Belnavis & Associates, where she coordinated community relations events in conjunction with clients desiring to reach diverse, and multicultural audiences.

Sondra Hines Yates’s work has been recognized through numerous awards that include: the Employee Health & Fitness Champion Wellness Award (2015), Kaught U Delivering Outstanding Service Award (2015), Volunteer Award – Outstanding Community Service, The Rock Church (2015), TRiO Faculty Award (SP2009), PT Employee Award Recognition/Teaching Award of Excellence (FA2010), as well as a nomination for the College & Career Readiness Teaching Award (SP2012).

Yates’s education includes a BA, Communications – Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC, Graduate Fellowship, Journalism – The University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC, Teaching Credential – Working Smart: Soft Skills for Workplace Success (May 2018), Teaching Credential- English as a Second Language, N.C. Community College System (Course to teach English to adult immigrants; December 2018), and the National Career Development Association; Certified Career Services Provider (2021), and a PT Adjunct Instructor Certification (2009)

Sondra Hines Yates is also a member of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, where she serves as the Chapter Journalist & Chair, Publicity/Marketing Committee member, and Social Media Manager.
